GWO Blade Repair (BR)

The GWO Blade Repair course is supporting the overall improvement of safety in the wind industry by ensuring personnel working with blade repair and inspection demonstrate safe craftmanship.

Delegates will gain the skills, knowledge and confidence to appropriately respond in the event of a hazardous situation when performing blade repair and inspection in the wind industry. This includes the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), emergency equipment and procedures.


Course Overview

A GWO Blade Repair course involves inspecting and repairing common damages caused by erosion, stress, lightning strikes, bird striker and cracks.

Delegates will learn how to repair the damage to the blade and bring it back to its original form while maintaining an aerodynamical state.

Successful completion of the GWO Blade Repair training will be assessed by direct observation throughout practical exercises and supplementary questions where appropriate. Delegates will also complete a theory test with a pass rate of at least 70%.


Course Objectives

Delegates completing a GWO Blade Repair course will be able to;

  • Perform and document a wind turbine blade inspection
  • Explain typical types of composite construction, materials and the importance of surface finish relating to aerodynamic performance and efficiency
  • Prepare operate and maintain the correct tools and equipment, be it mechanical or electrical
  • Demonstrate the ability to work safely with applicable chemicals while utilising the applicable PPE in a controlled manner throughout all phases of composite inspection and repair work
  • Distinguish between and work safely in a controlled manner with epoxy, polyester, vinyl ester, methacrylate, reinforcement materials and solvents related to composite inspection and repair work

Please note: The GWO Blade Repair training course is intended as an entry level course and therefore delegates will not be expected to perform repairs in major structural elements of blades like spars, spar cabs and carbon fibre.


Course Content

A GWO Blade Repair course includes;

  1. General safety (introduction, safety data sheet, work instruction, risk assessment, secure an area, contamination, waste segregation, ergonomic and lock out tag out)
  2. Personal protective equipment (PPE, masks and filters)
  3. General knowledge (chemical safety, composites and blade construction, materials, tools and equipment and phase test)
  4. Craftsmanship (lamination skills, basic lamination, sandwich panel, painting, blade inspection, lightning protection system inspection, grinding skills, sanding, laminate repairs, filling, surface repairs, trailing edge repairs, sandwich panel repairs, bond line repairs)
  5. Summary and final test
  6. Evaluation
