A Roustabout is an excellent first position offshore, with a good variety of job roles. You will work in shifts either day or night, 12 hours on, 12 hours off.

Your purpose will be to keep the drilling area clear and to assist with maintenance. You will also help to clean the drilling area and equipment as well as moving supplies and equipment to the work site.


Salary and Progression

Starting as a Roustabout you could expect to earn £20,000-£25,000 however with some experience your salary could be over £35,000. Once established, with experience, you can hope to become a Drilling Assistant or a Floorman.


Training and Experience Requirements

Given the variety of roles you could be asked to perform, a wide range of training will be beneficial and could be the difference between being selected or not. Banksman Slinger and Rigging & Lifting courses would be beneficial.

In addition, to work offshore, you will require valid basic offshore certificates including:

  • BOSIET
  • MIST
  • CA-EBS
  • Shoulder Measurements
  • Offshore Medical

It is likely that an employer will ask for other certificates too. It’s always a good idea to look at a range of job posts to identify commonly requested training requirements.
