OPITO Rigger Initial Training

The OPITO Rigger route to competence certification and reassessment includes four stages.

Initial training is the OPITO Rigger course which is for personnel who have had little or no training experience in rigging and lifting operations. Rigging and lifting operations involve the transfer of loads using lifting equipment which is often required in restricted areas which cannot be accessed by a crane. 

Rigging and lifting equipment and accessories are used by riggers and in other disciplines including operations technicians, deck crew and drill crew.


Course Overview

The OPITO Rigger Initial course provides knowledge of the principles and general hazards and risks of rigging and lifting operations.

The rigger course is comprised of two modules which cover the relevent legislation and regulation, and provide an opportunity to practice basic rigging operations folllowing a lifting plan.

Delegates will complete a theory test at the end of the Initial training programme to demonstrate an understanding of the knowledge elements of the course. Performance in the practical exercises which delegates must take active part in will also be evaluated against learning outcomes.


Course Objectives

Delegates completing the OPITO Rigger Initial course will be able to; 

  • Demonstrate the skills and knowledge to begin the next stage by passing a theory test and practical evaluations

Course Content

The OPITO Rigger Initial course includes;

MODULE 1: The Role of the Rigger and an Introduction to Lifting Operations

  1. The role of the rigger
  2. Introduction to lifting operations - relevant legislation and management of hazards

MODULE 2: Rigging and Lifting Operations

  1. The principles of rigging
  2. Preparing for the lifting operation
  3. Carrying out the lifting operation
  4. Restoring the work area and post-operation responsibilities

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for an OPITO Rigger Initial course.

Industry requested that OPITO develop a robust and auditable minimum standard for training and competence assessment for the role of the Rigger. A rigger uses fixed and portable lifting equipment and accessories to locate loads to a position to allow final installation or fixing, or move loads to a position where they are accessible to a crane.

The Rigger’s route to competence certification and re-assessment is comprised of four keystages.  The four key stages are:

The Initial Training Programme

Delegates successfully completing the Initial Training Programme will be awarded an OPITO Stage 1 Training certificate; this entitles the delegate to progress to Stage 2: supervised workplace experience. The Certificate is valid for 2 years.

Supervised workplace experience

Stage 2 specifies the series of supervised tasks which the candidate will be required  to complete in order to gain relevant experience in the workplace. The candidate must complete a log book record of the supervised tasks.

Competence assessment

Stage 3 specifies the assessment process and criteria for the Candidate to demonstrate competence in the Rigger role. Successful candidates will be awarded an OPITO certificate of competence. The Certificate is valid for 2 years.

Re-assessment of competence

Stage 4 specifies the re-assessment criteria for riggers, who wish to maintain their OPITO competence certification, Successful candidates will be awarded an OPITO certificate of competence. The Certificate is valid for 2 years.
