The Helideck Operations Initial Training (HOIT) standard forms part of a wider industry Helideck Training and Competency Framework.

Course Overview

OPITO Helideck Operations Initial Training (HOIT) provides the knowledge, understanding and skills required to safely and effectively fulfil the roles of offshore helicopter landing officer (HLO) and offshore helideck assistant (HDA).

OPITO HOIT is comprised of five modules including a combination of theoretical and practical training delivered over three days.

The optional Transportation of Dangerous Goods by Air Awareness e-Learning course is 60 minutes and includes a final assessment of 30 questions.


Course Objectives

Delegates completing OPITO HOIT will be able to;

  • Identify key parts of relevant helideck operations, regulations and guidelines
  • Understand helideck physical characteristics, obstacle-free requirements and equipment and systems
  • Understand meteorological requirements for offshore helideck operations
  • Identify typical hazards associated with offshore helideck operations
  • Understand the role and responsibilities of the offshore HLO and HDA
  • Understand the structure and terms in a typical pre-flight weather report and floating installation (or vessel) data required by helicopter pilot
  • Understand typical helideck team requirements for normally unattended installations (NUIs)
  • Correctly use handheld radios and appropriate hand signals if radio commuication is ineffective
  • Perform checks for contamination, debris or damage before and after take-off
  • Perform communication checks, checking helideck equipment status, safety nets, security and stowage of helideck equipment
  • Conduct helideck team brief prior to helicopter landing and at appropriate times during helicopter operations
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during helicopter operations
  • Ensure helideck teams are in required locations during helicopter operations
  • Conduct and respond to required helideck protocols during helideck operations including safe-to-approach, helicopter anti-collision lights switched off and 'thumbs-up' from pilot
  • Check passenger and freight manifests
  • Effectively supervise HDAs during passenger, freight and baggage handling
  • Load and unload life-saving equipment, passengers, passenger baggage and helicopter freight correctly
  • Identify dangerous goods during helicopter loading and unloading
  • Comply with helideck protocols and procedures during helicopter operations
  • Comply with helicopter danger area rules

Course Content

OPITO HOIT includes;

  1. Offshore helideck regulations and guidelines
  2. Helicopter and helideck hazards and management systems
  3. HLO and HDA responsibilities during helicopter landing and departure
  4. Cargo and passenger handling
  5. HLO and HDA - normally unattended installations (NUIs)

Prerequisites

In order to complete OPITO HOIT, delegates must hold:

  • An IATA, HCA, CAA or state aviation approved dangerous goods awareness certification (the FREE Transportation of Dangerous Goods by Air Awareness e-Learning course is included with this training to fulfil this prerequisite)
  • A valid, in-date offshore medical certificate OR an operator approved medical certificate

Helicopter landing officer (HLO) and offshore helideck assistant (HDA) roles

Before personnel can be appointed to the role of HLO or HDA they must receive all of the required training for the role which may involve additional training in offshore site-specific elements. Any additional training will be determined by the duty holder who will need to check the statuatory, regulatory and company-specific HLO and HDA training requirement for the particular region of operations.
