Thousands of seafarers from across the world are set to descend on North Shields after leading industrial trainer, AIS receives the marine industry’s seal of approval to run mandatory maritime training courses needed by anyone working at sea.

As well as offering basic marine safety training packages, AIS can now deliver specialist sector specific fire prevention and fire fighting and several security courses. All of these courses are approved to the Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) which means they are internationally recognised and are guaranteed to deliver the specialist skills required by the marine industry.

The qualifications are the latest to be added to AIS Training’s extensive portfolio, which now totals more than 175 industry-accredited skills courses, and will be delivered at AIS’s state-of-the-art training village in North Shields. This 12-acre site also includes a sea survival centre and onsite hotel.

Dave Bowyer, director of skills and education at AIS, said:

“We are delighted to receive approval from the marine industry to deliver this mandatory training. The maritime sector employs around 90,000 people in the UK alone and all of these people require specialist training before they set foot in a port or onboard a vessel.  The maritime sector doesn’t just include ship’s officers and engine room staff it also includes cruise ship personnel and port pilots, as well as numerous other positions.

“At AIS we already train approximately 20,000 people annually in skills such as sea survival, first aid and rigging and lifting and we are expecting to attract many thousands more with these courses.

“We are now looking forward to bringing our extensive knowledge of the global oil and gas, petrochemical and wind industries and world-class training approach to the marine sector to help further boost standards.”
