Overhead Crane Training

Overhead Crane training is part of a wide range of courses offered by AIS Training to assess competence relating to lifting operations both onshore and offshore.


Course Overview

Overhead Crane training provides delegates with the practical skills to safely and effectively operate overhead cranes, and knowledge of the relevant legislation that applies to lifting operations and lifting equipment and accessories.

Overhead Crane training can be delivered at AIS Training's state-of-the-art facilities or on-site, subject to the use of a suitably certified overhead crane.


Course Objectives

Delegates completing an Overhead Crane training course will be able to;

  • Understand legislation that applies to lifting operations and equipment
  • Safely operate an overhead/gantry crane

An Overhead Crane training course includes;

  1. Relevant lifting operations and crane legislation and regulations
  2. Recognition of the different types of overhead cranes and their controls
  3. Common types of lifting equipment and lifting accessories
  4. Periodic examinations of equipment inc. pre and post use inspections
  5. Defective equipment and quarantine procedures
  6. Hazards associated with lifting operations and cranes
  7. Safe working systems and control measures
  8. Loads – weight estimation, centre of gravity, security and stability
  9. Principles of slinging
  10. Use of tag lines
  11. Load and lay-down areas
  12. Use of personal protection equipment
  13. Methods of communication and announcements
  14. Use of signage and barriers
  15. Emergency procedures and escape routes
  16. Operating an overhead crane
  17. Crane control panels
  18. Slinging techniques
  19. Controlling the movement of a load
  20. Trial lifts 
  21. Landing of loads (inc. target practice)

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for Overhead Crane training.
