The OPITO Approved Application of Insulation Systems Competence Assessment Level 2 Standard specifies the assessment process and criteria for the candidate to demonstrate competence in the role an insulation practitioner. Successful candidates will be awarded an OPITO certificate of competence.
Installing an effective insulation system can protect the environment, equipment and personnel, control noise, reduce energy costs and increase process efficiency.
Competent insulation practitioners will have the skill to fit insulation systems to pipework, equipment and structures, and have an understanding of appropriate thermal, acoustic, cryogenic, personal protection and passive fire-proofing insulation systems.
Cladding is often installed over insulation to prevent ingress of moisture – a cause of costly corrosion problems Corrosion under Insulation (CUI). For inspection and maintenance purposes
Insulators at times will be required to strip cladding and insulation back to the coated substrate. Competently-installed insulation systems can help industry asset owners by:
- Reducing energy wastage
- Providing protection against the weather
- Protect personnel from plant and equipment that is operating at extremes of temperature.
This standard specifies the pre-requisites and competence assessment requirement for personnel undertaking formal assessment as an insulation practitioner. The insulation practitioners’ route to achieve OPITO training and competence certification is comprised of the following stages:
- Initial Training Programme
- Workplace Experience Tasks
- Competence Assessment
The aim and objectives of the OPITO Competence Assessment Level 2 are to establish that the candidate has the required underpinning knowledge, understanding and practical skills to fulfil the role of an insulator safely and effectively.
- Contribute to health and safety and effective work activities
- Apply insulation to various shapes
- Apply cladding to various shapes and surfaces
- Unit 4: Removal and reinstatement of cladding
