Fergus Lynch heads up the Renewable Energy Training Centre of Excellence at AIS Survivex which specialises in GWO training courses.
Originally from London, Fergus started his career teaching outdoor adventure sports in Wales and became a freelance instructor working all over the world.
With North East family roots, Fergus moved to Sunderland in 1994 where he studied sports science at university followed by a post graduate teaching qualification. Throughout his lifelong career in teaching and learning, Fergus has worked with several organisations including the Youth Inclusion Service, Youth Offending Teams and the City of Newcastle Outdoor Education Service. He became Centre Manager at Sunderland’s Marine Activity Centre before taking up a lecturing and Head of Department role at Northumberland College.
Fergus started training people for the renewables sector in 2013 and is now responsible for managing a team of up to nine instructors at AIS Survivex.
Sporty Fergus is a high achiever. As well as competing at National / European level in karate, Fergus coached both the Scotland and England surf kayak teams and several members of the GB freestyle kayak team. Four times World Surf Kayak Champion, Tamsin Green, was also coached by Fergus in the early days of her surf kayak career. British Canoeing has given Fergus a lifetime achievement award for his service to the sport.
He said: “I love my job. Everyday is different and we could be teaching anything from hub rescue to working at height or fire awareness.
“The best thing is the interaction with delegates. It’s incredibly rewarding helping people to train for their dream career and then seeing them come through the centre at a later date having achieved their goal. Knowing you’ve played a part in transforming someone’s life for the better, gives you a huge feeling of satisfaction.”
