After years working in the dangerous asbestos industry, Grant Young from Sunderland is enjoying a new career in global wind thanks to AIS Training.

27-year-old Grant has secured a job repairing wind turbine blades on a wind farm in Texas after completing all of the necessary GWO wind qualifications at AIS Training’s Renewable Training Centre of Excellence in North Tyneside.

Previously, Grant worked in asbestos removal for several years but was concerned about the hazardous nature of the job and was keen to change careers. He had always loved travelling and decided a wind career offered the opportunity to work in different countries around the world.

A friend recommended AIS Training, which is the UK’s largest wind training provider, and Grant completed all of the mandatory Global Wind Organisation (GWO) certificates there, as well as a specialist Wind Blade Repair qualification with Advanced Blade Repair. Although Grant had no previous experience of the wind sector, he registered with a number of specialist recruitment agencies and crossed his fingers. Luckily an opportunity came up in the States and, since Grant’s U.S. VISA was already in place due to a recent holiday, he was ready to work immediately and scooped the job.

Grant said: “At the moment I’m working in Texas repairing wind turbines and every morning I look out at the breath-taking views stretching for miles and thank my lucky stars.

“I’ve never regretted my decision to change careers for a moment and I’m so pleased I decided to go to AIS Training and Advanced Blade Repair for my training. The instructors are really knowledgeable and put their heart and soul into delivering course content, which creates a really memorable training experience. The facilities are first-class and the food is lush! I can’t recommend them highly enough.
