Former car mechanic Grant MacNeill has successfully transferred his skills and is flying high in a new career in the wind industry thanks to AIS Training.

After leaving school 22-year-old Grant from Glasgow studied car vehicle repair and management at college and quickly found a job as a car mechanic. But when his wife fell pregnant with their first child, Grant decided it was time to look for a more lucrative career with more job opportunities.

He had always been interested in the fast-growing wind industry and, after a considerable amount of research, found AIS Training had just the training package he needed to get started.

Grant undertook an intensive Global Wind Organisation (GWO) training package at AIS’s state-of-the-art 20-acre training village in North Shields over 7 days, which included all of the necessary health and safety skills required by wind companies such as sea survival, manual handling, boat transfer and working and height. Despite being a difficult sector to break into for the first time, within weeks of completing the course Grant had secured his first industry job inspecting wind turbines in Cornwall.

Grant said: “I’ve definitely made the right move. There are huge opportunities within the renewables sector with many wind farms currently being constructed around the UK and throughout the world, which will all need to be maintained. The training at AIS to get into this sector is excellent and undoubtedly helped me to get my first break. Having transferable mechanical skills in the first place was also a huge bonus.”
